Appalled of Somewhere Close to Tunbridge Wells*

Dear English-Speaking Universe -

Please to tell me that the proper plural of census is not censuses?

(For lo, I am not in fact idling my time away with alcohol and entertainment. I am filling out an application. It has an equality monitoring form. It wants to tell me that its questions are in accordance with recent censuses. I do not want to hear this. I may have shrieked aloud.)

I do not have enough Latin to sort it out, but, y'know. Censae? Censii? There must be something. Surely...?

*The village of Brenchley is in fact very close to Tunbridge Wells.

Alas, the plural is, indeed, censuses.

If you want to get Latinate, you could say censi. But it wouldn't work. Just wouldn't take. Ask me how I know....
