I went out (out!) for some potatoes, and came home with an idea for a story.

A long story.

Which I do not have time to write. Emphatically. I have to make my house nice, and redraft one novel, and redraft another novel, and redraft a novella that's so long it is technically another novel. And write a couple of plays, perhaps, and finish off some other work. And busy myself with our Sekrit Projekt. And and and.

There is no time to write tales of a city in exile, and the exiles it attracts. No. None.

But perhaps you should take a few notes on it just so you don't forget :)

Time to delegate: get some small typewriters for those lazy moggies.

Hee. Little furry sweatshop. Trouble is, I've seen cat typing. Indeed, I get to see it most days; they like to help.

I've written the first two lines. Does that count? I'm not good at notes...

---

Skandros. Eskandarria. Yxonda. Iz Indrian. Xantz...

How can you trust a city that has a dozen names, a dozen ways to introduce itself?

It counts. It's exactly the sort of notes you should be writing. Just keep on writing them. I want to read this. :)

This sounds like it could be a third foray into the Brenchleyverse of Outremer and Selling Water. Is it?

(I know, they aren't technically set on the same world, but they fit together in my head like that.)

And I want to add my voice to the desire to read it. The opening couple of lines are extremely more-ish. Mebbes not up there with 'In a hole in the ground lived a hobbit', but certainly up there...

I have always asserted that Selling Water is an alternate-world story, but that the world to which it is alternate is Outremer. In the world that Outremer inhabits is a city called Marasson, where they tell their own creation-myth about a city called Maras-Sund...

And yes. Given that this is all pseudoMediterranean cultures, then a pseudo-Alexandria fits right in. Even if I cheat it even more than I have cheated Palestine or Istanbul...
