How can I have a boxful of ancient disks attesting in and of themselves to my paranoia about back-up security, going back to books that almost predate the computer ("Floppies!" cried Alex, "how quaint!") - and yet not apparently have the One Book I Am Looking For, on any medium I can currently access?

I have the books that bracket that one chronologically; I have its sequel, several times. Just, not the one I need...

*sobs*

ETA: is okay! If you can't find what you want in the small things, look in the large: I powered up an old and semi-dead computer, plugged in ancient cranky monitor etc etc, and found it buried in an old back-up file I used to pass forward from one computer to the next. Yay. Lord only knows which version this is, but at least I have the words, in a format I can work with. (Tho' not in my preferred TextMaker - its vast and capacious filters cannot filter this. Indeed it says so, very specifically: "TextMaker is unable to open this file, as it is in WinWord 2 format." If it knows the format, why this uncharacteristic bashfulness? Is it legally forbidden to open WinWord 2 files? It's quite happy with all other known .doc formats. And OpenOffice is quite happy to open these. *is baffled*)

A riddle

What smells of damp in the morning, of fresh paint at midday, of chilli-spices in the evening?

Answer: my house, obviously.

In other news: the fabulous thing about a mobile phone? It allows me to text a teenager, which keeps us in touch on a level we're both comfortable with.

(Yes, absolutely I am grooming him. As cat-feeder and house-sitter, largely...)
