Live dinnerblogging - catastrophe!

Fool me twice, shame on me...

I can't believe I've just been lied to twice by the same recipe. And with regards to the same tool. Of course the meringue is not going to whip back to stiff and glossy peaks, once you've folded in a tablespoon of nut vinegar; of course the cream is not going to whip back into even soft peaks, once you've folded in all that runny custard. Just not going to happen.

So. Pudding will be served in bowls, and sloppily. Snarl. *scribbles all over recipe*

Also, two of my guests have cancelled. With justice, but now I have empty seats at my table and way too much food. As usual. Sigh...

Freeze a glass bowl, then put the meringue in it and try again.

Ooh, I love rescue remedies! Thank you; next time, I will absolutely try that.

The cats will, no doubt, help with the excess food.

Oh, how familiar this is! Recipes can be a Snare and a Delusion.

However, I'm sure it will be delicious, and _of course_ sloppy is how it's meant to be! Think up a snazzy name and your guests will be none the wiser: it works a treat when, to take an example at random - honest!, the rice is overcooked and claggy. That is 'Laos-y Rice'. Yes, it's true. I cook lousy rice.

Mmmmm, rhubarb pudding, it's delicious. Serve it over plain cookies (what I'd call vanilla wafers) and call it rhubarb trifle. mmmmmm

It's actually pretty yummy served over not-entirely-successful meringue - but the other, the third failure of the recipe was in quantity. There is far more pudding than any pavlova could bear. So yes, you're absolutely right: improvised trifle is the way to go. If you were only closer, I'd invite you round to share...

If only I were closer, I'd be happy to fight the cats for a chance at it! :-)
