...So I was out with m'young friend from Spain, and it was obviously my pseudo-avuncular duty to interrogate her about the luscious new boyfriend, so I did; and he is apparently a half-Portuguese communist soldier, and his name is Eneko.

"Coo," I said, "is that a name?"

"Yes," she said, "it's quite common, actually. It's Basque, and it means 'falling off a cliff'."

Which isn't exactly borne out by a little casual Googling, but on the other hand, who trusts Google? She was top of her class every year that she studied Basque, so she gets my vote. Besides which, it's just so gorgeously absurd, who could resist...?

Half-Portuguese communist solider with a Basque name that means "falling off a cliff". That's the best boyfriend ever. If you wrote that boyfriend up for a novel, nobody would believe in him. :)

Do you doubt her assertion that it is a popular name (it hasn't been really since hte middle ages) or its meaning?

I think Eneko is the Basque equivalent of Iñigo or Ignacio (another diminutive would be Nacho).
Whose meaning translates more as fiery/burning.

...or Google offers "possibly from the Basque ene ("my, mine") with the -ko diminutive suffix" - but that's just so much less fun, I'd rather live in her world. Which is, clearly, full of Enekos hurtling down from high places, and she just happened to catch one...

Or http://www.geocities.com/karen_larsdatter/basque/1df.htm, or "An important Basque king of approximately this time was Iñigo Arista (Iñigo (Eneko) the Oak) (c.781–852) first King of Pamplona" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basque_people), or...

I still prefer "falling off a cliff".
