The aspidistra! The piano stool! The way the uniform seems to have absorbed what individuality there might have been, so he is soldier-sacrifice! Poor kid.
He does look exactly as I imagined. But then, everyone looked like that in formal photos in uniform in those days. Much like photos of my grandad from the time.
