Solid air

Books are like flying.

There is all manner of ways in which this is a true thing.

I like books; I like flying. There's one.

Writing a book is dissociative; there's another. Which may be counter-intuitive, because writing a book is all about association, but the process sets you in a capsule, apart; you're disengaged, somewhat, and bring only your baggage with you.

Specifically and immediately, though: you know that moment when a plane hits take-off speed and suddenly feels locked into rails, so that ascent is both swift and inevitable on solid air? Writing a book is like that, at the start and at the finish, coming down again: gears and irresistibility.

There is nothing I can do to stop this now. Two swift brief chapters today, a wrap-up tomorrow and I'm done.

There may be champagne on Sunday.
