I don't know how much Google ads are context-sensitive, but next to all these posts about China MiƩville winning the Arthur C Clarke (for the third time this decade, yay China!) is an FedEx ad crying "China's economy is racing ahead!" - which made me snortle, yes it did.

In other less snortly news, I am still kinda gobsmacked that a man who admits fracturing a boy's skull with a three-kilo weight gets off without a custodial sentence. I know he's a nice church-going middle-class teacher under stress, but even so: fractured skull? three-kilo weight? "die, die, die"...?

Also, it would be nice to live in a country where a politician confronted by a bigot is not obliged to apologise for calling her a bigot. Pipe-dreams, I know, but still...
