Now that I have repurposed my smartphone as a kitchen timer, the world makes better sense to me: but I have a niggle. Even running as a timer, the phone still goes into sleep mode after a set number of seconds, so that I can't check the timing at a glance; I have to turn it on again and play touchy-slidy before it will show me the timer screen. This is a fiddle, and it annoys me. I don't even know if phones come with a way to turn that feature off, let alone whether you can turn it off for one app but leave it on for others. My pitiful ignorance will probably be the death of me, in some near-random and unpredictable way.

In other news, it may possibly be a warm day but even so: I need comforts, so I am making chilli and rice for dinner. Not a hot one, on account of wives and so forth; I can't remember the last time I made a dish properly hot. I may have lost my legendary tolerance for capsaicin. I am planning to make an exceedingly hot little relish to go on the side, but I always make that plan and I seldom make the relish.

Right now, though, I am going to introduce a cold beer to hot sunshine and a good book. For the first time in a long time, I am not reading Iain Banks today. Neither am I working. M'wife is probably being more literary, writerlike and industrious than I am, off as she is at her writers' group. (I would list the other participants, but they're all on LJ and the typing HTML codes is too much for me today.)

EtA: Oh, and I remember, I had something else to mutter about! These kidney beans: they looked oddly pale even in the store. After six hours' soaking, most of the colour has washed out of them and they're a kind of blushy pink. Surely nobody would go to the trouble of dyeing pale beans dark, would they? I don't believe there's a price premium on red beans, so what on earth would be the point?

EtA2: Fixed! [livejournal.com profile] timill inspired me to look, and there it was, just one level down in the menus: Keep Screen On. Somebody had clearly thought about this! Yay! (Mind you, it still goes dark at the very moment the timer runs out and the cock begins to crow. That's just silly...)
