There were birdies, I tell you, little birdies actually at our seed feeder this morning! Mac and I were united in our excitement. I don't know what they were, mind - little brown birdies, a tolerably pale brown, with perhaps a hint of red at head and chest, possibly a touch of yellow in the wing - but definitely songbirds of some kind, four of 'em, all chowing down on the sunflower seeds. And a scrub jay hopping about in the grass, and a squirrel tidying up whatever the birdies let fall.

And a Jesuit who came to lunch, in the form of Brother Guy. Who is welcome to come back any time, because that was such good fun.

We characterize the house finches as "numerous and belligerent" although "entitled" might be more accurate. If you keep feeding, you will get to see their youngsters soon. They fledge a couple of sets a year under good conditions (which a bird feeder helps provide). The singing is totally worth it IMO.

If you start running into squirrel trouble---they can empty a feeder in an hour and your wallet in a week---I can point you to some squirrel-proof arrangements.
