Saturday Post
Feb. 28th, 2015 02:04 pmToday's bird of the day is a dark-eyed junco. The name derives from rushes, although it prefers dry areas to wet, and its systematics are not yet completely untangled. I think it should get right on that.
Today's dish of the day might have been the cottage pie I'm planning for tonight, with many mushrooms hidden among the beef - but I haven't made that yet, it's just a gleam in my stomach's eye (and I'm still wondering about maybe giving it a dauphinoise-type topping, sliced potatoes rather than mashed). So instead, today's dish of the day is the bowl of udon noodles I had to my lunch, with eggs and my own bacon and chillies and the first mushrooms of the day. That was yummy and I could've eaten it all over again, but greed is bad.
Today's mushroom of the day is chestnut.
Today's displacement of the day is apparently going to be food. I ought to be typing up more editorial notes, but I'm tired and my shoulder aches something cruel when I'm sitting at the computer, and I'd really rather make a cup of tea and read The Thirteen Gun Salute, but that would be indolent and unproductive, while mere thinking about dinner is contributory and helpful as cats*. Has anyone ever made pommes dauphinoise with buttermilk, I wonder...? Because I have buttermilk, but K drank all the milk (and cream, alas, is deprecated).
Today's unexpected deal of the day was duck eggs at the farmers' market. I would say that was pure gravy, but they're not gravy, they're eggs. And she'll be back next week, the nice egg lady, and we have a foie gras party to attend the Friday following. Is there anything one can do with duck eggs and foie...?
Today's second shopping trip of the day might be to the Indian grocery store, but - nah. Sod it. I'm heading for the couch.
*We have very helpful cats. You should see Mac scrutinising the distribution of breakfast gushy fud, and Barry flattening the clean laundry for us.
