So I hid my slices of worktime nibbly salami under the keyboard, what time I slipped downstairs to refresh my glass of worktime wine.

That thump I heard downbelow? That was indeed the sound of Mac casting my keyboard to the floor, in order to get at the salami. Sigh. Please can I have stupider cats, please? I hate that feeling they're one step ahead of me all the time...

In other news: a cold? Just now, with a book to finish and public performances looming? Do. Not. Want.

(Actually, usually I'm a hot-toddy man: give me whisky, lemon, honey for medicine. With a dash of angostura for flavour. Just, today I've got this death-march thing, I'm trying to work through it, so I'm hurling down the wine as being slightly less lethal to the working impulse...)

Yup, it's a grand thing. And oh, so good for you... (And so various: I have known people who grate nutmeg into their toddies; Geoff Ryman once mixed in cumin for me, when I was too sick to mix my own. Me, I stick with the Angostura, when I can find it.)

I tend to favour a toddy made with Laphroaig 15 - even if it doesn't cure what ails you you don't care because it's so yummy.

No arguments at this end. I used to use cheap whiskies for toddies, on the grounds that the good stuff would be wasted with all the additives; then I ran out of cheap stuff and had to use Laphroaig. And haven't looked back since...

Even my cheap "quaffing" whiskies are single malts. I strongly recommend the Waitrose and Sainsbury's Islays for emergencies.

I've had Sainsbury's, and enjoyed it; but neither of these two is readily accessible to me (still no Waitrose north of Durham, and I live the rough end of town, where Sainsbury's does not care to tread). Besides, I am a brand queen. Macallan is my drinkin' whisky and Laphroaig is my sippin' whisky, and everything else is a tasting whisky to be slotted somewhere into the spectrum between 'em...

There's a Waitrose in Hexham. Or, of course, you could come to Durham...

But I have had supermarket own brand Islay which I did not like (can't remember which one, and doubtless adding hot water and honey to it would have helped. And a clove or two).
