I am sitting at Jean & Roger's kitchen table with J, R and Gail. We were discussing disquisite, and whether the word exists. I (obviously) googled it. It doesn't exist in English, but a website offered me rhymes for it anyway.

Look for yourself.

It's about this time of day I like to open a bottle of wine and munch on savoury snacks while I computerise.

I have several friends who become suddenly and unaccustomedly abstemious in January, forswearing alcohol for the whole of the month, in a kind of detox I-can-do-this demonstration sort of a way. Two of them came down for lunch in Durham (Gateway to the South), so we drank only water with the bread and cheese and olives.

This evening? All I want is a cup of tea and a mince pie, apparently. I guess perhaps my body is reacting to this last week, when I may possibly have drunk more than usual.

That's fine. And I do have some very nice teas. But - well, one day's enough, surely...?

...Oh, wait.

I do have ham. And eggs.

And we had cheese and pate and olives and tomatoes and bread for lunch, with a tart of oranges to follow; so ham and eggs and potatoes for supper would be a positively balanced diet. *exhibits virtue*

Might just add some chillies to the spuds, though. Hot hash.
