The Once and Future Laptop
Jul. 10th, 2013 04:41 pmAfter lo these many years, the Laptop of Heavenly Perfection has been nicknamed Arthur for the duration, and set to sleep in a drawer, against a future need. (I should probably sleeve it in white samite and change the password to Excalibur! - but I'm not going to.)
If anyone has any bright ideas or good sources for laptop sleeves, though, I'm in the market for a really cool one, for the Laptop of (Un)Utterable Delights.*
We are again in the realm of changeable names, clearly. At the moment it's only running Windows 8, so it's Utterable. It doesn't become Unutterable until I get Ubuntu up and running. A few bold souls have done this, but their reported manoeuvres to get dual-boot and wi-fi working are way beyond my Linux paygrade. I'll wait for the next formal release (13.10, in October), and hope some kind person will have fixed that for me.
Meanwhile, I'm settling in with the LUD. Its screen is very reflective, which is a bit of a shock after the matt of the LHP, but I'll get used to that. The only difficulties so far (apart from Windows 8, which is weird) are that the wi-fi is weak in this one (it drops off randomly here in my study [the router being the other end of the house, in Karen's] and can't find a signal from the clubhouse at all, where the LHP is fine in both locations) and that I can't get it to work with my bluetooth mouse. It thinks its bluetooth is working, I know the mouse is working with the LHP, but the LUD can't locate it. "It's sitting right here!" quoth I, to no avail.
Still, we have USB mice, and of course it has a trackpad. All is well.
*Hunh. I just googled, and yes: there are sleeves available with images of Mars. Is that too obvious? I was thinking maybe something steampunk and handmade, but...
