I no can has Laptop of Heavenly Perfection!

The dealer I'd ordered it from was lying; they had none. And a desperate trawl through the internets keeps turning up other dealers advertising even-cheaper deals - and no stock. Someone more skilled or more patient or less miserable than me might be able to turn one up somewhere, I guess - but right now the only one I know about is the one in John Lewis in town, which is their display model and hence on special offer and still 50% more expensive than the deal I wanted. Which is such a deeply unattractive notion that I am not going to do that.

Maybe I'll just buy myself an Eee instead. But it will be no compensation, and oh, I am miserable...

Apparently I have not been charged. I'm choosing to believe them.

It's the Sony Vaio VGN-G11XN/B - the sexy carbon-fibre one. I have been jonesing for it all (last) year, and I guess I just dithered too long...

There'll be another along in a minute. Sony churn their model numbers like a one-armed bandit.

Meanwhile, I should warn that their installed software is shit, and you can expect to spend the first couple of hours clearing spyware off your hard disk ... although if you plan to stick in an Ubuntu DVD and nuke Windows you'll probably be fine (but make a restore DVD image from the partition on the Sony Windows system first, because they'll try to weasel out of your warranty if it springs a hardware fault and there's an operating system on it that they didn't put there).

NB: Sony laptops are half the price in Japan. It is literally worth buying an economy class ticket and flying out there to bring one back from a branch of Yodabashi Camera, if you know what you're doing. Or you could ask the nice folks at www.conics.net if they can set you up with a grey market import ...

I know, but I don't like any of the other models. This one was just perfect; its replacements have different screens, different keyboards...

Yup. I was poised to do pretty much all of that.

That I didn't know. Thank you!

I am very sorry - this is so crap! I know it's not much consolation, but you will find another good deal on the LHP... even if it's not the exact same one, it will be just as good.
