Except that I don't, actually, as I have nowhere to go; but I could if I wanted to. I have a passport. Delivered by hand, no less. It says I mustn't put it in the microwave. No, really? Damn... (Happily, of course, I have no microwave; it can sleep safe.)

Also, this is weird: it struck me suddenly, this one's good for ten years, which means that the next one will see me to my pension and beyond. How's that again? Me, who's still struggling to get out of my adolescence...?

Actually I was hoping to come to Ireland this year, which is secretly why I bought the passport. (I don't know what the rules are currently, but I'm betting I'd need some kind of current photo ID. Which I do not have, unless I have a passport.) Apparently that's not going to happen now, so I must simply possess my soul in patience...

Yep you'd need photo ID if you're flying, not sure what the case is with the car ferry.

As far as I remember, when we came over by ferry in the '90s we took our passports with us but nobody ever asked to see them, on either side going either way...

(I wonder, though: if a photo ID is all that's required, would my old passport have sufficed? It may be expired, but its facts have not: that is my name and that is my face, identifiably...)
