So I didn't sleep well. Again. I have the night fears at the moment: I'm okay in daylight, while I can keep busy, but in bed - well. Not so much with the okay.

So I was late out of bed, because of course we cling to that which frightens us; and then I magnificently cocked up the coffee. Thing is, if I know I'm going to the library, I make double quantities so as to fill a flask. But, hearken and attend: if you grind double beans and then forget to pour on double water, what you end up with is not so much chewy as sliceable. And diluting it later just isn't the same somehow...

So anyway, I was late to the Lit & Phil and not well coffee'd, and some other bugger had got my table already. And even my second-choice alcove was taken; so I ended up in the furthest sulkiest corner, where the table is Too Small and Too Low and ill-designed for anyone with knees. Knees and a bad temper, not a good combination. I have seldom been less gruntled.

I did some work none the less, though I think I deleted as much as I wrote; and I got out of there too early, and unsatisfied.

Still. Today's shopping was a box of C4. Not the plastic explosive, no: in this context, it's a size of envelope. And with 250 of them, it'll probably see me out.

No, I mean that. These are the envelopes that I used to post my stories in, and what with SAEs included, I would have gone through 250 in easily less than a year. Six months, maybe. These days? With e-mail my own default position and increasingly the default for submissions also, I won't use 25 in a year. Some years, I might not use ten. And that's only going to go one way, here on in.

Similarly I bought a box of a thousand business-letter white envelopes, maybe ten years ago. Just about the time that e-mail did indeed become my default position. I've probably still got eight hundred of them, and will certainly die with the box not empty. Oddly, I find that kind of comfortable. It's the hoarder in me: I am actually, unequivocally sorted for envelopes.

Likewise going through a lot fewer envelopes these days, for roughly the same or higher number of submissions.

Bad coffee days, like bad hair days; we do not love them.

Did you receive my e-mail, or is that too having a bad day? Either way, are you free tomorrow evening?

Have I told you about the time my comrades in arms, a bunch of Navy cops, banned me from making the office coffee? I will sometime.
