Between the end of the Grand Prix (yay Ferrari! mock the ambitions of McLaren!) and the start of My Fair Lady - viz, at about 2.45 this afternoon - I went out the front and ripped out the undergrowth that infests that little stretch of ground - it's about a yard deep, on average - between my house and the public street. I have guests coming tomorrow, and I don't suppose they're bringing machetes. So I went at the weedery bare-handed - and there must have been a teeny-tiny nettle in among the dandelions, because my hand suddenly went all stingy and ow. Ow, I said. And possibly other words. But I was a brave soldier, and carried on; and after a minute it was less excruciatingly painful and more interesting, and that was fine.

Except, it is now 5.15, almost at the end of My Fair Lady, and my hand is still all tingly and a little bit ow. That can't be right, can it? Nettle-stings don't last that long...?

Still, I am pleased with today. I have cleaned the stove! Almost all of it, including both ovens! And numerous surfaces and such. And I have fed laundry into the laundry-eating machine, and received clean linens in exchange. I have yet to scrub the kitchen floor, but hey. There's time. And then tomorrow I can hoover, as hoover I must. (Is it a generational thing, to speak of hoovering rather than vacuuming? It is the way I grew up, and what I do by nature, although none of my vacuums has ever been a Hoover; but I am more and more aware that fewer and fewer of my friends-and-acquaintances do it...)

Also, despite all this homemaking, I have written the better part of my word-ration, and will tackle the rest of it now. Still hating the book, but getting it done regardless; that's worth something.

And tonight I have confit of duck.

There is also this bottle of wine...

I went for a walk one day, and got a nettle sting, which was still hurting a lot when I got home. It seemed odd because I'd also been knocked down by a car earlier in the walk, and that didn't hurt so much as the sting, though the bruises lasted longer.

I think the main cure for nettle stings is to have circulating blood, which carries the poison away from the wound (though presumably to other bits, so it's more a dilution than a cure as such), so perhaps exercise, or at least hand-wriggling, would be good.

Unless it was a triffid of course, in which case you're doomed, but at least it's the End of the World as well, which is great for things like credit card bills.

*wriggles hand, and looks forward to the End of the World*

But watch out for those cars, y'know? All that getting knocked over, it's not good...

Nettle sting do last a while. I wouldn't worry about it. You could always get your revenge by cooking and eating the offending nettles. They're quite similar to spinach, and don't sting at all when you eat them!

I recommend boiling them first before eating them. Then, tasty.

Got any dock leaves?
Or maybe anti-histamines...they have helped me when Things Bite.
