Baz had to have cheese to compensate, because cats can count, y'know, in the matter of treats. Their formal counting goes "nose, ears, nose-and-ears, paws, whiskers!" - where whiskers! is any large number and should probably be run away from - but they are very good at knowing when one cat has had one more treat than the other. 'Specially, it turns out, in the matter of bacon-rind...

What about tails? Tails are very important in counting.

Ah now, in this house tails are the death of counting. There the poor boys are, puzzling their numbers out with paws and ears and such - and then they catch one glimpse of their tail and

--pounce!--

all that tedious counting is entirely forgot, in pursuit of more important matters. A number is only a number, but a tail is a foe worth fighting...
