Okay, look, the baseline event is obvious and everybody does it: where you go downstairs, and then can't remember what you came down for.

The follow-up position, also fairly basic: you go downstairs to do something, and find yourself doing something else instead.

Has anybody (else) ever gone into the kitchen to cook dish A, and suddenly woken up to the fact that they were in the middle of cooking dish B instead?

I meant to make a dhal, with chana and carrots and green beans and such. By the time I understood that I wasn't doing that - which was actually the moment when I realised that I hadn't reached for the turmeric, and how can you make a dhal without turmeric? - I was halfway through making a potato curry. Which, the way I do it, utilises almost exactly none of the same ingredients. I guess they have salt in common.
