I am Plumber; hear me roar...

So: I diagnosed the problem, from first principles; I learned the name of my broken part from a text (it's a banjo overflow unit, since you ask); I went to the place of plumbing supplies and found the very unit that I needed, in a total replacement kit; I figured out how to fit the new kit, which told me via reverse-engineering how to remove the old one; I did that, with my bare fingers and a pair of pliers, which are all the relevant tools I have; I installed the new kit, with my bare fingers and a screwdriver, which again are all the relevant tools I have; and y'know what? It works. My sink fills and empties and does not (so far) leak.

This is not a total job, as I discovered in the process just how foul & blocked my U-tube is. I would've taken it off and cleaned it out, I did try, but see above under relevant tools: those nuts I couldn't shift with my fingers, and I don't have a wrench. No matter; it's waited all these years, it can wait another week. I will do it. I have decided: I like plumbing. What else can I plumb...?

*looks around vaguely for more cat-vacuuming plumbing*

Also, what else have we learned today? We have learned that I unscrew with my left hand, and screw up with my right. I've probably done it all my life, and never noticed 'til now. I noticed now because I went "ouch!" a lot, undoing everything with my left hand, which totally knackers my poor bad shoulder; and thought it might be a good idea to use my right instead, and couldn't do it. Each hand knows which way to turn, and they are opposites.

Right. Now, if you will excuse me, I am going to fetch myself another of these nice gins-and-tonic-with-lime (for it is that kind of day), and write my writings, for I have not yet made quota.

I am Novelist; hear me whimper...
