There's a fashion in kitchenware these days, to have your pottery emblazoned with words. I am agin this: I do not want my teacup to say "a nice cup of tea" around the rim, nor the pot to say Assam - Darjeeling - Ceylon. Etc. Pie-plates with the names of pies on 'em. Do not want.

Also, I have never gone for that thing of buying plates to hang them on the wall. With the sole exceptions of my mad-bunny plates, which are ironic and evil and I shall post photos sometime so that you know it.

But: walking down the stairs this morning, communing with the boys, I thought there might be another exception. If there were a plate - in cream earthenware, with big black writing on it - I would happily hang it on the turn of my staircase, if it said Down the Wooden Hill to Breakfastshire. Call me a sentimental fool, but I would do that.

In other news, I have pigs' cheeks for supper, and I am proposing to seethe them with ginger. But wine and ginger, or lemon and ginger? And cream in the sauce, and potatoes alongside; or no cream, and rice? Difficult decisions...

It occurs to me, how the world has changed. This will not be news to you: but five years ago, I would have addressed this question in an e-mail to a chosen friend. Ten years ago I would have phoned someone, and the question would have triggered a discussion and ended with an invitation. Now I fling it to the winds, to the world.
