Technically, we call this waiting-in-for-plumber; but we do not like to think about that. We will not think about that.
We do not like to think about taxes either, but much of what needs doing is mechanical, and could happen without thought, while listening to the Second Test.
Except...
There is of course always an "except", and today it is 85 pages.
I am 85 pages from the end of this draft. The end of this book, effectively. There will still be copy-edits and proofs after this, but I don't think those count as drafts.
There is new stuff in this draft, that I won't even have read through before the copy-editor has it. I hate that. I always want my own final draft to be mere fiddling, shortening sentences and extirpating adverbs: but no, this time there are whole new scenes going in, which I won't get to review in context until it's too late for any further significant revision. Eheu.
Also, this is (probably) the end of the Books of Moshui, my fantasy-Taiwan project; I don't think a fourth book is really on the cards (though I could totally write it, if asked. I have a title and everything). Which means it's the end of a ten-year relationship. Eheu fugaces, Postume, Postume, labuntur anni. I am older and no bloody wiser, and the world is heavier by just three books. Which it doesn't seem to have noticed, much.
