Today has been all about the rain, although the sun is shining as I type.

We started late, with omelettes and croissants and brioche and coffee and chocolate on the Place Maubert (if you assume that we didn't start until we left the flat, as opposed to starting with the whole waking-up-in-Paris thing, which is a slow thing and needs time to be appreciated, like a cat); and then a walk in the rain to the Cluny and its gardens, and an unhurried wander through its galleries. I could possibly have spent all that time just looking at the first exhibit, which is an extraordinary carved wooden altarpiece with more dimensions than it can properly understand. But then there were the heads of the kings of Judah, and the frigidarium, and the tapestries, and the exhibition on the history of the sword (Joyeuse! It's actually there, and we have seen it!) and the wonderful books of hours and and and. So we looked at all of that, with pauses to sit; and then we found a bar, and sat over a fruit tart (raspberries on frangipane) and half a bottle of Cotes du Rhone, and then we moseyed (mosied?) on home. And tonight we are booked for dinner with Aliette, but right now Karen has crashed out on the sofa and I am reading Hemingway, how on a wet day in the '20s he walked in the rain down past the Pantheon and past the Cluny and across the blvd Saint-Germain to the place Saint-Michel,and, y'know. Us too, more or less.
