I just sent off the proof corrections for 'River of the World' - by e-mail, hurrah! So much more civilised (and cheaper) than posting a dead tree - and that's that, then, nothing more to be done to the book, no way to rescue it now. It's on its own out there.

Which reminded me, I had not remembered to post my favourite line out of the whole novel, my utter darling; so here it is. It's short, it's sentimental, it's me all over (and, in context, it's bitterly ironic - but you won't get that without you read the book). It is:

He had his crippled city at his heart's door, knocking.

I am looking forward to reading 'River of the World' with that peculiar sense of torment that strikes me when I have to wait for a book that I know is going to be good. Hurrah for e-mail, indeed! Especially if it cuts even mere days off the wait!
