Tree winter madness

It's December 23rd, viz two days after the shortest day of the year, coming into deep winter now - and one of my ficus benjamina (indoor weeping fig trees, to you) is coming into new leaf. Sheesh. The other one - which stands exactly next to it, is the same age from the same source, and gets exactly the same water, food, light, loving & neglect - is sneering at it.
