Of my bounty, this I offer thee

See here?

This little flame of orange is my first sun-ripened open-air chilli: I hope the first of very, very many. It's a chile de arbol, since you ask, and watching its behaviour thus far I think it's going to dry on the vine as it ripens, which is just fine by me. As you can see, there should be lots of these. I may even make my own chilli powder. (Chilli powder is another Thing That Is Not The Same in this country which is after all not just England With Better Weather: in the UK, chilli powder is powdered chillies, over here it's numerous spices mixed together, mainly chilli and cumin and oregano and garlic and after that they get secretive. There is a whole blog post to be written about the spice cupboard and the differences which appear to be defaults.)
Oh, and one other thing: any idea what this is?

(The banana is for scale. Useless hint: I was going to use the cat for scale, but then the cat wanted to start eating the Object, please, so I removed him.)
Yup: it's a small green pickling cucumber. Which I had tragically overlooked, as it was engulfed in the jungle that is my tomato patch. Apparently this is what happens. I shall cut it open tonight, and see if there's anything to be done with it.
