Today - via a comment from gjules to a post by james_nicoll about something else altogether - I learned about Operation Cat Drop.

I go to bed tonight a better, happier person than I arose this morning. Fourteen thousand kitties, for urgent delivery. Purrrr...

I think it was Poland that also had to import cats a few years ago. I can't remember exactly why.
