The nice thing about living in California, of course, is living in California. *beams at CA*

One of the many nice things about our little bit of California - as I may have mentioned once or twice - is that SETI is a short walk away, and their regular colloquium is one of the highlights of my week.

Sometimes Karen comes too, if it's an evening talk or if she's working from home. As she is today, and so we went together; and we were sitting quietly at the back while they fiddled with the set-up and fixed the feedback up at the front and so forth, and then the day's speaker went over to the podium to get miked* up and so forth; and then he looked out over the audience and grinned at me and called out, "Are you Chaz? And is that Karen?"

For yes: today's speaker was [livejournal.com profile] brotherguy, and it was suddenly all SETI-meets-LJ as two worlds collided.

It was actually my fault that he was there, as the colloquium has a suggestion board, and I'd thought to suggest him and realised I didn't know how to spell his last name and went home and remembered and I think actually wrote it down to take with me to the next talk and remembered again and wrote it in. And the nextest time, Adrian said "Chaz! We've booked him for February!" which is now, and was today.

I always knew he'd be good, and I was right. The Vatican's Jesuit astronomer: he lives and works at that very interface of science and religion that's so fascinating. And he's a very practised speaker, and - yeah. Next time, he's totally coming to dinner.

*I am just sayin', but I cannot live with mic being pronounced mike, or mike being spelled mic. When I was young, the word was microphone and the abbreviation was mike, and that is still how it is in my head, in my lexicon and in my journal. Also, what would this form be in the new dispensation - miced? mic'd?
