I can cook, but I'm hopeless at catering: it's a totally different art. I worry constantly that there won't be enough, so I make too much; and I plan more than I make and fall short, always; so there is a sense of failure beforehand, during and in the aftermath. Thus do we set ourselves up for one fall after another.

At the moment, the plan says:

Make hummus, beet dip and salsa; buy chips.

Make chilli. Not hot! Make a seriously hot relish on the side, for the heat fans...

Make sossidges wrapped in bacon.

Grill things; make buns for grilled things.

Make apple pie, in belated acknowledgement of Pi Day.

Nothing difficult there. But I am beset with questions. Should I make rice for the chilli? Or will people want chips, or bread, or...? (I am making bread; bread never goes amiss.)

What should I get for the grill? Will people bring things for the grill, do they do that as a matter of course? Will they bring anything as a matter of course? American parties: I do not know. *gibbers*

Actually, of course, the one thing I know for sure is that there is no need to gibber. People will come, and bring stuff, and have a good time. And if there's anything we really lack, Lucky's is just around the corner and we've got all day.

However. There are two ways to make a party happen: and one is with calm and organisation, while the other is with panicked flailing.
