I appear accidentally to be writing a story by Iain Banks. By Iain M Banks, I should say.

In an ongoing, perhaps an endless series of attempts at definition, the System had described itself variously as a Dispersed Commonwealth, the citizenry of a pan-galactic and entirely notional city, a people without a home, a union of all trades and none, a life without margins, a life in the margins, a state of mind and a state of grace.

See?

(Actually, my favourite line so far is an external definition of the same phenomenon: a poor excuse for sovereignty, but a sovereign excuse. Anybody can have the harmony, if they will leave us the counterpoint. Paronomasia as a textual instance of the contrapuntal: discuss. Not too heatedly.)

In other open questions, why have I not been making bacon for decades already? Once you have laid hands on your curing salts (and, in this burg, on your pork belly), it's just so easy. I threw a batch together this afternoon while I waited for the water to boil for rice.

The other question of the day is this: if an artefact is a made object, what's an artefiction? An imagined object, a thought-experiment, the box Schrodinger never made for his non-existent cat? Yup, that's what I thought, too. This may be relevant to my interests.
