Ah, petty things. I shall be nibbled to death by ducks, when all I ever wanted was to be trampled by a herd of kittens and go down fluffy.

Karen woke me this morning with the news that the bath/shower tap pull-up switching device thingie (why no, I do not know the word for it) is malfunctioning. Which is sub-optimal, for we are cleanly people. So I wanted to go zooming off on my bike to the library this morning, and instead I have to wait in for the plumbing folks, and you know how much I love to do that. And first there will be phone-calls to field, and you know how much I love to do that; and the nice lady at the plumbing folk who operates the phone is Japanese and really doesn't speak English, so you can just imagine how much I'm looking forward to that.

And the water company is digging up our street, so there are mighty noise-making machines at work just out there, doing their very best to achieve even mightier noises than you can possibly imagine.

And the cats have been bloody evil all morning, except for the little moment where this happened:

And I am an Ahtist, damn it, and I should be making Aht; I have an Iain M Banks story to write! Also, Kipling on Mars! And others! My agents are eagerly awaiting something else entirely! And here I sit, fretful and contrary and twitchy as hell, utterly prevented from doing anything towards anything of use. Birds build – but not I build; no, but strain, Time’s eunuch, and not breed one work that wakes. Mine, O thou lord of life, send my roots rain.*

*I love Hopkins with a love that transcends all loves else, except for the others that I love equally or more. I kind of think this appropriate, in context. Or am I just being Jesuitical?
