Why do they say green fingers, when what they mean is black fingernails?

Aaaand I just planted up a hundred square feet of broad or fava beans. Hunh. Going to have a beer now, before I even think of doing anything else. It's really not been that much work - and every time I do this, I think "why don't I do more work like this? I do enjoy it, and the garden would be a hell of a lot nicer and more productive" - but even so. Beer now. That surely is the point of gardening, to enjoy a beer in the garden?
