But I want you to know it was entirely successful: it was one of those narratives that we were both writing and living (even while I knew that I was dreaming it), and the SFnal elements really seemed to work (for values of SF that are tolerably lenient), and we sort of saved the world (at least for the machines in the short term, with a tacit understanding that human civilisation would inevitably fall but had a chance to rise again), and like that.
And then, in the writerly sit-around-and-drink-up afterword, a new use of an old word emerged: "backgrounding" is now defined as that noble art of drinking all evening on somebody else's dime and never paying for your own round. Contextually, she cried "I wasn't backgrounding, honest!" even when it was transparently obvious that actually she was.
