If there are better things than repotting plants into your own compost, one of them surely must be repotting plants that you've grown from seed, into your own compost. One of these days I will line them all up and have them worship me.

Today it was Mexican gherkins. And no, I don't know if they're going to fruit (in Newcastle, when I sowed them late to start with). It's a glorious experiment - but just think of the joy of my own dill pickles, if it works. (Makes mental note: must plant more dill. Just in case. And stand by to eat a lot of fish, in case not...)

Barry is a wimp. It's so hot in the back yard today (south-facing and white-walled, catching and keeping all the sun there is) that he has taken to lying in the shade, while I sneer.

I'm not worthy. Chris can grow all manner of things, extraordinary and standard, from seedlings or even seeds. I can't even grow mold.

I never knew I could, until I bought a bay twiglet and it didn't die (indeed, it flourisheth). So then I started a herb garden, and then someone sent me some chilli seeds, and now I hate greenfly with the best of 'em.

It's a middle-aged thing (sigh). And a cooking thing (hurrah!); I don't grow anything I can't eat. Well, I used to grow catnip, which has no known human-culinary uses; but Misha used to eat it. And then come indoors to be sick, which was why I stopped growing it. Maybe I'll start again, for Barry.

It is odd, though. I've been so profoundly urban all my life, couldn't even grow a pot-plant, and now suddenly I ache for an allotment, I would kill for a greenhouse and a garden...

Well, it looks like the house we are buying (well, we've put in an offer on a house and we're waiting to hear back) has space for growing vegetables and also has a greenhouse. So, if you want to come and do things there...

Where's it? (Actually, the sad fact is that it probably doesn't matter where it is; a greenhouse is not a sometimes thing, it tends to need attention morning and evening, and I doubt you'll be in walking-distance. Even so...)

No, unfortunately, we're not going to be within walking distance for you - the place is in Forest Hall.

And you complained about getting to Heaton...

You just know that when they worship you it will be in the form of a Mexican wave!
