desperanceOne of my roles at Book View Cafe requires that I make good my long-time boast, that I have the soul of a copy-editor.
Right now I am copy-editing Linda Nagata's sequel to her novel The Red: First Light, which I also CE'd. And which is now on the Nebula shortlist. We at BVC are ever so slightly delighted by this. Especially me. Only a cad would go about trumpeting the importance of copy-editing in a book's success, but hey. Caddishness will out, like secret garlic.*
Last night I got to share my pillow with Barry, all night long. This has never happened before; it may never happen again. He's a whimsical beast. But for one night, he chose to be as close as he could come. That's something to hold on to.
*It should be noted here that I have such a bad track record with CEs that a major publisher once asked me in desperation if I would prefer my books not be copy-edited at all. And I think he meant it.
