Key change

Okay, this is weird. Am typing on the original keyboard that came with this computer, while my enormous divided Save-Chaz'z-Hands keyboard is drying gently in the bathroom (on account of yesterday's wine incident leaving it with one key inoperable - uh, the return key, which pretty much renders the whole machine inoperable). It's a really odd keyboard anyway, this, the smallest I've ever seen with a desktop - perfectly well-made, just tiny and flat and pretty safe to knacker my hands. At the moment my fingers keep falling over each other. Which is, as I say, weird, because they're also used to working on v small keyboards, both the new-to-me Vaio and the old Packard Bell Easymate 770, and I'm completely comfortable with switching between those and the big board. This is just an odd halfway house, and I'm stumbling: not quite sure which mental instruction-set to engage, I guess.

I ought to do some work. I suppose. Haven't written anything for days, what with one thing and another; and I'd planned to dive into Big New Fantasy from May 1st. But I'd planned to have finished Stupid SF Novella before the end of this month. Even a week ago, I was still thinking I could do that, with a bit of a death-march charge. Hasn't happened, can't see where it will happen; too many distractions just now, I can't close the doors on the world and just buckle down. Hey-ho. I think my buckles are broken.

I know that feeling. Buckles get worn out, just like bootstraps.

Maybe we need to be velcro'd to our computers?

Have you tried using the Enter key (far right of your keyboard) as a substitute for the Return key? I know you have Linux and so they may be different, but for many purposes my Windows PC treats them as synonymous.

Ooh - yup, that seems to work! (On the substitute keyboard, that is: the big one is still drying. And will be for days. And of course may not work at all, after a liberal rinsing...)

I didn't know that. Thanks, Roger...

Watch yourself with the backup keyboard. I had to abandon my 1997 vintage ergonomic keyboard when I bought the new laptop last year, because Precioussss did not play well with a USB-native machine. Pulled out the USB keyboard that came with the previous machine, and within the day headed off to buy a new ergonomic keyboard, because within ten minutes I had the worst bout of RSI I'd had in years...
