Teapothead

'Member how I said that Mac liked to eat used tealeaves, and I'd only just stopped him sticking his whole head into the pot in pursuit of 'em?

I went downstairs this morning to find the teapot upside down on the sofa, where I had not exactly left it. Given that cats have not yet developed opposable thumbs, I can think of no way that he could have got it there from the coffee-table, except by wearing it on his head.

Still, at least he clearly did get his head out of it again - eventually? - so I need not worry overmuch about that any more.

Tho' I might start looking for a pot with a lid. Or preferably one with replaceable lids, because I do break 'em with a tedious regularity. (I once broke the bottom off a teapot, by dropping its own lid into the pot. This ought not to be possible, but I did it.)

In other news: I thought cats were not supposed to like citrus? Mac goes for marmalade...

Plastic bodum-style plunger teapot?

The one I broke the bottom off was exactly that, but glass. Obviously.

As is with most things about cats, there are always exceptions to the general rules.

A certain percentage of cats react to citrus as if it were catnip.

Yup. Seem to have got one of them. Citrus and chocolate and tea-leaves: these are the treats, thus far discovered...

Perhaps it would be worth the extra effort to knock the leaves out of the pot onto a plate for him. It would save wear and tear on the teapots, and probably on Mac's neckbones as well.

I once lived with a cat who loved oranges. She was not a standard cat, having been raised as a puppy. Redbird's <lj-tag="juliantiger"> is also extraordinarily fond of citrus...not just begging for fruit and eating it, but trying to eat citrus-scented bath soap (once, anyhow.)

Eww. Soapy mouth-froth...

But, "raised as a puppy"...? Adopted by dogs, does this mean? Or trained to fetch?

Right. And considerable risk of cat falling into a tub full of water, bubbles, and a person who would prefer not to be used to gain traction.

>But, "raised as a puppy"...? Adopted by dogs, does this mean? Or trained to fetch?

It was a big household, with 10-14 students, 1 large dog, and a kitten. The dog and the kitten played together a lot. Sometimes the kitten was just tagging along while the dog did his thing, but sometimes the dog appeared to accept her as a puppy and try to teach her to hunt, and dig, and turn in circles before lying down. There were some very cute images of the dog trying to eat his kibble, with the kitten perched on the edge of his food bowl, gnawing on a lump of kibble half the size of her head. The cat also learned to fetch when she was a little older.

Big grinning. We have that too - especially the person...

And I love the kitten-who-grew-up-as-a-puppy: supports all my ignorant prejudices about nature-vs-nurture. I just always want nurture to win, all the time...

Try making catnip tea one of these days. Now there's a pot full of fun.

Snerkle! Snortage! What a fabulous idea - and now possible, because I can grow da nip again. It had become a little wearisome, with my late beloved Misha: we played this constant game of hide-and-seek, where I moved the plant around and she tracked it down, and then she ate it, and then she went indoors to be sick...

*LOL*

My cat, [livejournal.com profile] tatsuko_shikibu, goes nuts for spicy human food like jalapeno salsa. They're individuals, just like us: I don't think you can say they don't like any particular thing.

Cats are freaks. I love 'em.

Aww, your cat has an LJ! *goes off and friends immediately*

Barry also likes his food spicy (just as well in this house, if cats want to scrounge; most of my cooking errs towards the hot). Mac is thus far expressing more exotic preferences; I haven't tried him with anything seriously hot yet.

Possibly the only cat-novel I really like, "The Wild Road" by 'Gabriel King' (uh, that would be Mike and Jane, then...), features inter alia a Maine Coon who is very fond of chillies...

My Hobbes likes spicy, too -- but again, that might be an availability thing. She's been known to drag takeout boxes out of the trash and lick them out.

One of my mom's cats, Willow, loves strawberries. She'll just rasp them with her tongue until she wears away a concave surface. She's also been known to get her head stuck in yogurt containers. (She's a very small cat, about 7 lbs.)
