Okay, folks: someone out there (and no, I can't remember who, which is why this is a general post) was asking some weeks back, about which was the best book for birding with in the States. If it's still a current question, I have a definitive answer for you: the Sibley Field Guides, in two vols, for Birds of Eastern/Western North America. This info comes to you courtesy of the man once described as "the best birdwatcher in Britain". It's good to have friends...

Excellent; I'm glad the news found its source. (Uh, that doesn't sound quite right, but it's early. You know what I mean.)

Tim says there is also an original one-volume version, but - well, not so good as a field guide, if it's comprehensive. Besides, unless you're right on the midline I guess you must live either in the eastern or the western half of the continent, that seems to cover the bases...
