If it's still a current question, I have a definitive answer for you: the Sibley Field Guides, in two vols, for Birds of Eastern/Western North America. This info comes to you courtesy of the man once described as "the best birdwatcher in Britain". It's good to have friends...

Besides, unless you're right on the midline I guess you must live either in the eastern or the western half of the continent, that seems to cover the bases...
