There can be no conceivable excuse for a person having more than five thousand messages in his inbox. None.

(And yes, I have read them all. I read them religiously scrupulously, as they come. And then, um, just leave them there. Kind of like everything else in my life. The only thing I do try to organise is the cats, and you know where that-all leads...)

I beg to differ. I currently have well over 5,000 messages in my inbox (and various folders into which said inbox dumps them after electronic sorting).

I am still thinking about my excuse. I am considering placing the blame on aliens, the Bush administration, or devious gnomes with a dark and sinister agenda. Perhaps all three.

Makes me feel very virtuous to have got my inbox down to under 500 messages. Though with Gmail they can be both filed and sorted and in the inbox. Some of them are sorted, some are not. So - I'm sort of semi-good.

Outlook Express used to tell me how many messages I had; Thunderbird only tells me how many unread messages I have (actually, I have read them, but that was before Thunderbird, which evidently doesn't count).

I have folders; so I can move a message from the inbox to the appropriate folder (it's not like deleting, which mostly I can't do).

Somebody has just sent me 82 emails, none with a message, but each with an attachment which I think if I can assemble into the right order along with another three missing emails and decode it may, just may, be a video made in 1976 of a sorely-missed writer (JD). That's how my in-box fills up.

I'm slogging through the various email accounts -- I have over 2500 messages in one, 1800 in another and 600+ in another that need to be sorted.

Sigh.

I understand the problems.
