There was a cob of fresh corn in my veggie bag this week. Just the one, and rather small: so I thought I would experiment with corn chowder.

And hunted up a recipe on the internets and was seduced - as so often, and in so many ways! - by a fine list of ingredients and a confident manner. Sigh.

I should have enquired more closely into its character method. Halfway through, I suddenly noticed where it says: "remove bacon strip".

I'm sorry? Remove bacon strip?

*stupid recipe*

*adds more bacon*

And it doesn't tell you to put it back in later so that it stays crispy? Sheesh.

Nope - it appears to be there purely as a flavouring, like the bay leaf. Sheesh.

Crispy bacon as a garnish, though - nice idea! Thank you!

I'm sure crispy bacon might be a bad idea sometime. I'm just not sure when.

We accidentally left one of the bay leaves in my Cuban black bean soup the first time, which would usually be no big deal. Except that we decided to try something weird with the leftovers and pureed them with cream. That was really good, except for having to pick bits of bay leaf out of every other bite.

Hee. I made a fish soup once, one of those that you press through a sieve and discard the pressings, to end up with a thin but highly-flavoured liquor? Alas, my sieve wasn't up to the task; so I abandoned sieving, and decreed that it would be fine as a thick soup, with textures of real fish.

Tasted fine, sure. But honestly, you could've walked on it...

My blender very nearly gave up the ghost when asked to make tomato-pumpkin soup. Pumpkin needs a lot of liquid to go into soup form. It looks all innocuous and pasty, but really: uff da. Extremely thick. I translated the noises the blender was making as, "Why, God? Why?"

We made smoke come out of a blender once. Our first blender, its first use: we were that new to it all, and we made it smoke. It was trying to chew up some fatty pork, for making pate with. Uff, as you say, da. Smokin'.

Hurrah for dead pig, and plenty of it.

Some people buy that "turkey bacon" stuff. Some people are evidently sick and warped.
