Writing away today, realise that one character has to have a home, don't want it to be anything ordinary, think I'll have her living on a Dutch barge. Never been on one, but I read an article once, and I've wanted one ever since (it's the current fallback position: if I have to sell the house to pay the debts, I'm going to buy a barge and live on that instead).

So, barges need water. Where shall we have this boat? Somewhere handy to London: I've been spending much of my fun time recently in Henley-on-Thames, which would be a swell place to moor a barge.

So that's a decision, then. So I google Dutch barges for a bit of authentic detail to lend verisimilitude - and what's the first barge on the list? It's for sale, is what it is. In Henley.

I've been avoiding this one - it's one of those "if you want to be my friend, tell me stuff about yourself and us" memes that seem a little intrusive or else a little public, perhaps publicly intrusive, to buttoned-up Britishers like me - but I am so very working, I just filled one out myself, and it seemed a little mean not to reciprocate.
