That was a morning's work, that was. And look, I've worked my way through ... oh, all of twenty pages. Sigh...

In part it's just mechanically slower, doing this on the laptop: ducking and diving to and fro, back and forth, highlighting and deleting and substituting with a mini-mouse and a tight keyboard; but only in small part. In large part, it is as ever in my head. Trying to hang on to the big picture and the immediate scene while I chew over every word individually and in its place, in its context. Some writers go through a manuscript several times, I know, reading for different things at every pass, but not me: I'm looking for cuts and inconsistencies and infelicities, for rhythm and reach and depth, for story and for storytelling, all at once. And I've been doing it this way thirty-odd years and still, still it surprises me every time, how slowly I progress.

Still. Onward. I need to get this done this week. And I've cut 1200 words out of that first twenty pages, which is neat. Keep that up and the book may actually be its proper length when I first turn it in. Which is unheard of.

Um. Technically, I suppose this is a good thing? At least, I keep telling Dan so.

But.

Those of you who have pre-ordered Daniel Fox's Dragon in Chains from Amazon UK - note, this applies only in the UK - will not be seeing it any time soon. Del Rey is apparently still hoping to sell the book to a UK publisher for an authentic British edition (which is what makes this a good thing, that they think there's still a decent chance of that), and therefore they won't be supplying their own edition to Amazon UK, in order not to queer the pitch for this hypothetical UK publisher.

Whether other UK retailers or indie specialist dealers will be able to get hold of copies, we are not clear. The couple that we've checked so far do not have the book listed.

Um. Don't know what to suggest, really. I may import a boxful myself - but I did that with the Ace books, and I still have large quantities of hardbacks sitting around in the house here. So maybe not.

I may have something more useful to say soonish; just now, I'm still trying to get my head around it. Daniel is just clutching his, and moaning gently.

And no, I'm not going to post a photo of his book, which arrived just moments ahead of this news; that would be mean. I am not mean. No, sir...

I wanted to make a fish pie tonight (comfort food!), despite having no milk for the sauce and no potatoes for the topping. So I poached the fish with mushrooms in a velouté made with fish stock and cream, and topped it with parsnip and celeriac mash; and y'know what? Of course you do. Best. Fish. Pie. Evar.
