Okay, it works. Indeed, it works just lovely, except for running yuck-spit Windows Vista. Which it took me ten minutes just to work out how to turn it off. And it is very full of crap I do not want, but I'm kind of shy of dumping stuff in case it turns out to have been very necessary after all (I have forgotten most of what I ever knew of Windows, and have never seen Vista in my life; I'm very edgy in there).

Next thing to do is slap a Linux live disk in, and see what happens. 'Cept that I don't have one just now. Rather than buzz around the house downloading & burning and suchlike, I thought I'd just install a Windows version of my WP software and scuttle into town, introduce the Vaio to the Silence Room in the Lit & Phil, see if I could figure out how the wi-fi works, then maybe buy a magazine with a live disk on the cover.

But! I got as far as coat-and-boots, then looked out of the window. It's raining! Eek! I don't care about me, but my Vaio!! I don't have a waterproof case for it! Indeed, I don't have any case for it. I have a cool & sexy backpack that I was going to slip it into, all casual-like - but I know that's not waterproof, I've washed it. Eek!

So either I wrap it in some demeaning plastic, or I leave it behind and do other stuff. Like shopping for a waterproof case for a Vaio. Eek!

*exits, squeaking*

ETA: Or, of course, I don't go. Yet. I've just rec'd a book order from Australia! Never had a book order from Australia! And I owe books to a couple of other people also, so I can take half an hour to pack those up, and then maybe it will've stopped raining...?

Guess what arrived yesterday? My very own copy of "Shelter." I started it last night. Took me three pages to get over the fact that there was no mention of cooking, Barry or Mac. It was a weird experience. I'm enjoying it so far. This is one of those books that you have to pay attention to when you read.

This is one of those dauys when hibernation seems like a good idea. Had to go out and now I'm back I'm wet. From the tone of this post there's a good chance I'm hysterical too.

Have fun with the Sony. Vista works perfectly well for me. Except when it doesn't, like when I leave the system just sitting there for a while. Funny how it doesn't do that when there is music playing (presently Fleetwood Mac's Green Manalishi)

Shiny new toys are a delight, aren't they.

Ooo, a Vaio! Shiny!

Vista... not so much. ;) I'll be interested how you find it; I've only worked with it at work, so I have only a passing acquaintance with it myself. But I regularly hear from others who are not very impressed.

Happy New Laptop Day!

My new laptop arrived today, too, so I am declaring it a day of national celebration.

Congrats on the laptop!

One of the biggest obstacles in my laptop hunt is that I WILL NOT have Windows Vista -- it's vile and screws everything up. Everyone I know who got it got rid of it and went back to XP, which actually works a portion of the time.

Besides, I'm switching everything over to Mac once I've moved . . .

Not to spoil your happiness, Darling Uncle, but a friend of mine, name of Calum, bought a Vaio and had to send it back to Sony three times in just over a year because the mother board kept burning out.

But then again Calum thinks the world is hollow (with people living on the inside), and made of magic hexagons (?), and that NASA are going to blow up Saturn...

I'm waiting for him to come home for easter so's I can tell him all about the dangers of Dihydrogen Monoxide. You know DHMO is a major component of acid rain and thousands die every year after inhaling it?

Loves, Abigail

Aargh, these nieces, they get everywhere...!

*is suddenly scared, at the idea of Family reading this...*

But I'm not worried about the Vaio. To start with, most burn-outs happen early, and it's been used for eight months already; and besides, I've still got sixteen months of warranty. Vaios have a wide reputation for going wrong just after the warranty expires - but that's on a one-year warranty, and this one came with two. Not worried. Except about your friends. Do I need to come up there and play the stern uncle, vetting them to see if they're suitable companions...?

Well, he's actually my boyfriend's friend. Calum's the drummer to Rich's guitar wizardry. And he's in Kingston at the music college there for 8 months a year, so you'd need to go to Kingston to vet him.

This would be the boyfriend your Facebook refers to as your husband, I take it...? *puts on monumental frowning uncle face*

And Kingston - is that Kingston upon Hull, or Kingston upon Thames, or some other Kingston? I'm not going to Hull, but as it happens I'm often quite close to Kingston-on-Thames...

Have you checked your only slightly used laptop to see what was on the hard disk?

Oh, and Hi, Abigail, we met one evening in Kirkwall....
