desperance: (chillies)

This morning I am waiting in for a package. It might be my old passport, returned; it might be my new passport delivered; it might be my passport application rejected. It might be none of the above. I do not know.

What we all know, I am no good at waiting in. I am frustrated; apparently, whatever work I need to be doing today, I cannot conceivably do it at home, no. I desperately need to be out of here.

So, I am preparing a big pot of chilli-with-meatballs; and doing it in the slow cooker, which allows me to take all the time I like. So I virtuously boiled the soaked kidney beans for ten minutes, though it might have been more like twenty, to kill off the bad things lurking inside before I gave them to the pot. Then I added sliced onion, carrot and celery. Then smoked garlic and birds-eye chillies, a chipotle and hot smoked paprika. Now I'm pondering, what goes next. And watching the clock, wondering where this damn package is. And like that.

Ever wondered why you have to cook kidney beans properly? I could tell you, but some memories you just don't want to exhume.

You stay in all day, but nobody comes.

Have you ever attemmpted [livejournal.com profile] cvillette's chili verde? Or any other chili verde?

No, and not yet: because (a) we hadn't been introduced (another Chaz! This is v cool - but I couldn't spot the chili verde recipe on a quick skim: does the LJ have an index...?) and (b) you need tomatillos for a proper chili verde, and you very rarely see them here. I tried to grow them one time, without joy. I do know where to order 'em, though. Maybe this summer. If I have a proper recipe. (Most of the ones I've seen are all about tins and pre-prepared salsa and such, which is not of interest...)

Here it is. I became acquainted with him via [livejournal.com profile] matociquala, and he's a seriously foodie kind of guy, so there are recipes scattered throughout the journal. The chili verde recipe calls for two bottles of beer, one of which is for the cook, so you can see what you're getting into there.

I find it works well in a slow cooker, but peeling the roasted peppers (I ended up with some of every green variety in the store) is a right pain.

oooh, I've just got a slow cooker and haven't used it yet ... I'd be v.v.interested in a chili with meatballs recipe! Sounds v.yum ... does it get served as is, with a swirl of sour cream (or creme fraiche), with tortilla chips or with rice (and with salsa and quacamole, and/or grated cheese)?

Umm, any or all of those. Probably all, before I get to the bottom of the pot... (Except perhaps the grated cheese, unless Friends descend: I myself have never quite worked out the point of the cheese-and-chilli combination.)

There isn't exactly a recipe, I'm more or less making things up as I go along (the slow cooker is quite new to me too). I will post a separate How I Did It This Time entry, though. With comments, how I could do it better next time.
