Yesterday? Oh, yesterday I didn't hurry out of bed, and didn't fret about working. I went into town and posted a couple of packages (books to my agent for foreign-rights adventures, and a copy of Phantoms III, which everyone should buy instanter - [livejournal.com profile] andyhat, yours is on its way!), then strolled up to the farmers' market. Where, as usual at this time of year, I spent money at the herbs stall.

Carried my booty home, and spent the afternoon vaguely working on peripheral documentation for the Dracula book (Chaz Holds Forth about Victorian Times). Then I put my suit on (there are three males in this house; two of us wear black; black is very slimming; the tabby doesn't need to slim) and strolled down to the university for a wine-and-nibbles reception at the start of a weekend academic conference on crime fiction. I'm not actually participating, for lo, I did chicken out of offering a paper, but they invited us anyway, which was nice. And I drank lots and ate whatever came my way, and talked to good people and was dragged (kicking and screaming, yes) to the theatre bar when the reception was over and more drinking happened, oh, and such a lot of talking...

And this morning I have planted out my haul from yesterday - some Afghani shallot sets, a couple of thymes (silver and variegated lemon), a French marjoram and an apple mint - and I am going to have an idle unhurried morning, before strolling down to the Miners' Institute for a crime readers' day with my fellow Murder Squaddies, Margaret Murphy and Cath Staincliffe. Gainful employment, we call this. And look, I don't have to write anything. Gainful employment and a day off, both at once!

Sounds like the perfect day! (All it was missing was a random flying cat attack. Can't have a perfect day without a random flying cat attack, you know.)

Oh, I don't bother to record those any more: just take them as read...

Ever read The Historian? This made me think about it, since it's about Dracula, too. And since you're more of a wordsmith than most writers, I'd be curious what you think of it.

Not read it yet - I'll try to remember to Utter when I do. Thanks for the nudge.

And my copy of Phantoms III arrived already. Sometimes transatlantic mail transit times truly do surprise me.
