Okay, look. It's a known response and I'm not at all surprised about it - but when the crisis is in part financial, it really would help if my reaction were not to spend money, y'know...?

I went to town to write and pay money into the bank. I came home with the money (which I forgot to pay in, again) and one page of story; and:

a book
a kilo of cherry tomatoes
cured meats
three t-shirts
a ball of string w/ dispenser

How much of that did I need? Um, none, for any measure of need with which I am familiar.

Oh, and I came home to a letter telling me that my bank account was to be debited £11,000 next week. It, um, doesn't actually contain £11, let alone the thousands. I had to phone India to get them to admit it was a mistake, bah humbeg. And I will still be watching my account on the 14th, just in case. I'd hate to have them take it anyway, and me not notice...

Was the £11K an amount you were expecting to pay at some point, or is your bank just collecting contributions early for its xmas party?

They said "the letter was sent out in error." Yup. I could've told them that. The only time I ever paid anybody that kind of money - or indeed ever expect to! - I was buying a house. The proper amount they're meant to take is £40.

That's some error.

Are you, perhaps, Mr Sumner in disguise?

Humbeg? Is that some rare Indian spice of which only the truly cognoscent - like yourself - have ever, well, cognosed?

You know, my bank did once accidentally withdraw £50,000 from my current account and sent me a letter to say I was overdrawn... When I arrived on the doorstep to give them the polite-speak version of wtf are you playing at? They blamed it on "computer error" and said if it happened again I could keep the money. I'm hoping...

Never mind hoping - now is the time to take action! Have a friend take a job with said bank, let them make such another error in your favour, and behold! It's yours! (And then split the profit with said friend, obviously...)

(My own long-term pension/survival plan involves my catastrophically libelling a friend in a high-profile publication. They will then sue me and the publication indiscriminately. Obviously, I have no money and can pay them nothing, but they will reap vast profits from the publication. Which they will then split with me. Yay...!)
