Today - before lunch, yet! - I have written a review of Verdi's Macbeth, that we saw last night (darling du review: "Macbeth is a baronial façade, crumbling into ruin; his wife is acid rain"); I have abandoned the notion of finding the book I wanted, and spent an hour drawing up an alternative menu for tomorrow's Chinese feast; I have gone into town, to the Lit & Phil, and started a new chapter of the new novel.

I have been reminded that I'm meant to be back in the Lit & Phil tonight, for a Laurie King gig with Val McDermid.

I have walked home via the fishmarket and bought some fishy remnants, with which I shall make a lusciously fishy stock with ginger and garlic and a splash of Shao Xing, with which I shall make a light and shimmery soup tomorrow: with pak choy, perhaps, and mushrooms, and whatever fish is good in the market tomorrow. This wasn't on the menu when I set out, but hey. Extras are always good. And Fish Heads for Tea is now very much on the boys' menu. Though I might make 'em eat them in the yard. Messy mess...

Also I have got the pdf proof of my new "Nature" story, so that's ongoing. Is pretty picture. I would show you, but I'm not allowed.

Laurie King is at the Lit & Phil tonight! Bugger. I saw her at Waterstones with Val and Manda Scott a couple (?) of years back. Obviously my antennae waren't working properly.

Now that you have a new menu and are shopping for it, the book will resurface. because books are like that, perverse things that they are.

Fish heads for tea? The boys will be so grateful! I predict a fight will break out.

These heads are bigger than theirs. By a distance. I have hopes that one each will satisfy...

Sensible cats would be happy with that.

Do you have sensible cats?

Right, then. Sorry, I knew that, shouldn't have asked.

Bless their furry little heads.
