My friend Devon Ellington is publishing her novella Hex Breaker today: get it as a download, get it as a CD. Either way. And read an interview with her here, in which she cites me as, um, an influence. And so forth. Ahem.

And! I was going to make a post about why it is not wrong for writers to expand their series into short stories and novellae as well as books (having only just discovered that apparently some readers think it is wrong, and grow quite irate on the issue), but I find that my good friend [livejournal.com profile] moshui has done it already. Go you, and read him; he says everything that I wanted to, and more. And friend him while you're there, why don't you? He could use the support, and he's a lot more interesting than I am.

Oh, and while we're on the subject, if anyone out there enjoyed Bridge of Dreams and River of the World, be aware that there is more story from that story in a short story, "In the Night Street Baths", published in Lace and Blade. To the high regard of Tanith Lee. As mentioned heretofore. (Sorry, but that keeps repeating on me...)

Your friend with the oddly familiar prose style can't spell james-nicoll :-)

See, other people? They all have their blind spots. They're unreliable; some of 'em are downright careless. Luckily, I don't apply the same standards to my friends that I do to my prose, or I'd have none...

'Lace and Blade' is a damn fine anthology. I bought it for your story and for the one by [livejournal.com profile] sartorias - usually I'll buy an anthology just for one story, but the prospect of two made me squee like a middle-aged fangirl. Both were even better than I'd hoped!

Please tell [livejournal.com profile] moshui that I'm looking forward to his book with great anticipation! I have ordered it through Amazon: does that have any impact on your - his, I mean - publisher? Or is it more effective to order it via my local bookshop in dear old Hertfordshire? Because my daughter will also want a copy, so I should make an order as effective as possible. If that makes sense!

[editor making happy happy noises} Am now finishing the line up for the next Lace and Blade, due out Valentines Day 2009, with similar delights.

Six and two threes, really. I believe deeply in supporting independent bookshops, what few there are remaining, and I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] moshui agrees with me on this, but I don't believe he has a UK deal yet, and an independent may find it harder to get hold of a US import; whereas Amazon is at least sure to have copies. And, yes, the publisher will be aware how many copies are shifted through Amazon, while an independent's order will get buried somewhere in the wholesale record. Your call, basically...
