Oh, f-list - why haven't you been full of the news that Pauline Baynes has died?

She was probably the first illustrator whose name I knew (well, it would be her or Quentin Blake, depending on whether I read Narnia before or after the Uncle books by J P Martin). Certainly her early illustrations defined the worlds of both Lewis and Tolkien for me; it was years before I could re-imagine them according to my own readings. And when I think about the books, it's still her covers that I see.

Here's PNH talking about her, a bit.

This is the second time this week that someone's died whom I couldn't've said was still alive. Sad, really, that I do not know to appreciate who lives still until I can't.

Oh, no! I love her drawings, always so lively. What a loss.
