Oh, f-list - why haven't you been full of the news that Pauline Baynes has died?
She was probably the first illustrator whose name I knew (well, it would be her or Quentin Blake, depending on whether I read Narnia before or after the Uncle books by J P Martin). Certainly her early illustrations defined the worlds of both Lewis and Tolkien for me; it was years before I could re-imagine them according to my own readings. And when I think about the books, it's still her covers that I see.
